Read with your ears, or with your eyes.

A young turtle leaves the beach at night. The shore disappears. There is no trail in the water. Earth is quietly magnetic, and she can feel something of that field. Not as a picture. As a sense. A traveler needs two things. Which way. And where am I. Sea turtles appear to have both.

Some birds travel at night. The land below is dark. Overhead, the real sky still turns. A bird can learn the pattern of that turning. She is not reading a map with names. She is keeping a heading through a sky that moves.

A salmon is born in fresh water. She leaves. The ocean is huge. Years later she comes back. Close to home, smell does much of the work. Each stream has a chemical voice. Out in the ocean, that voice cannot reach. There, Earth itself may be the map.

A desert ant leaves the nest and hunts in a scribble. When she finds food, the path home is almost a straight line. She is not following her own footsteps. She is counting steps and reading the Sun, even the hidden pattern of light in the blue sky.

A forager comes home and walks a figure on the comb: a straight waggle, a loop, the waggle again. The angle of the waggle is the angle of the food against the Sun. The length of the waggle is the distance of the flight. A dance can be a map.

This story is not an animal story. In 1976 the voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa sailed from Hawaiʻi toward Tahiti. The navigator was Pius Mau Piailug, of Satawal. He read stars, swells, birds, and clouds. This is teaching and attention, not instinct. A person can learn to read the ocean.
